The 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet

On July 31, 1715, a powerful hurricane struck a treasure fleet sailing from Havana to Spain, destroying eleven Spanish ships off Florida’s east coast. An accompanying French vessel, Grifon, escaped. The fleet carried gold, silver, jewelry, and other valuable cargo from Spain’s American colonies. Wreck sites lie along what is now Florida’s Treasure Coast, including waters near Fort Pierce, Vero Beach, and Wabasso. Approximately 1,000 people died, while survivors reached shore and established camps awaiting rescue. Spanish salvage crews began recovering treasure soon after the disaster, but considerable riches remained beneath the sea. Centuries later, discoveries of coins, jewelry, and shipwreck artifacts brought renewed attention to the fleet and helped inspire the region’s “Treasure Coast” name. Today, the wrecks remain an important part of Florida’s maritime history
